Panasonic Developing New High-Capacity EV Battery to Extend Tesla Model Y Range by 145 km
2025-09-23 | Eric
On September 18, Reuters reported that Panasonic is developing a new high-capacity electric vehicle (EV) battery, which is expected to extend the driving range of the Tesla Model Y by about 90 miles.

As one of Tesla’s key battery suppliers, the Japanese company is working on an anode-free battery design. Panasonic stated that by the end of 2027, this design could achieve a “world-leading” battery capacity level.
According to reports, Panasonic’s new technology will eliminate the need for an anode structure during the manufacturing process, freeing up more space to hold additional active cathode materials such as nickel, cobalt, and aluminum. Panasonic expects this will increase battery capacity by 25% without expanding the battery’s physical size.
This means that if the Tesla Model Y is equipped with this new battery of the same size as the current pack, its driving range could increase by approximately 145 kilometers. At the same time, Panasonic could also use smaller, lighter batteries to deliver performance comparable to the Model Y’s existing range.
In addition, Panasonic plans to reduce its reliance on nickel, which remains one of the more expensive raw materials used in battery production.
However, Panasonic has not yet disclosed the production cost of the new battery, nor has it revealed the timeline for mass commercial production.
