World’s First! CATL’s Sodium-Ion Battery Certified Under New National Standard
2025-09-11 | Eric
On September 5, CATL’s sodium-ion battery passed the GB 38031-2025 “Safety Requirements for Traction Battery of Electric Vehicles” (hereinafter referred to as the “new national standard”), becoming the world’s first sodium-ion battery to obtain this certification.

The new national standard will officially take effect on July 1, 2026. It is designed to eliminate the risk of spontaneous combustion in electric vehicles at its source by imposing strict safety requirements across multiple dimensions, including thermal runaway, bottom impact, and fast-charging cycles. In third-party authoritative tests conducted by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center’s New Energy Testing Center, CATL’s sodium-ion battery demonstrated excellent safety performance at both the cell and pack levels, successfully passing all tests.
The sodium-ion battery not only reduces reliance on lithium resources but also fosters a safer and more low-carbon battery industry ecosystem. It further addresses the low-temperature challenges in northern regions, accelerating the adoption of new energy vehicles in northern China and other high-latitude areas. Achieving certification under the new national standard marks an important milestone for sodium-ion batteries, paving the way for large-scale application and widespread household use.
