Multiple Global Firsts! The World's Largest Energy Storage Validation Platform Launched in Xiamen
2026-06-04 | Eric

On May 28, the Xiamen Institute of Energy Storage Validation Technology, jointly established by the Xiamen Municipal Government and CATL, was officially launched. Covering a total area of 150 mu (approximately 100,000 square meters) with a planned investment of around RMB 3 billion, the institute is currently the world's largest and most comprehensive one-stop testing and validation platform for full-scenario energy storage systems.
The launch ceremony was attended and witnessed by Lu Jiazheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Power Grid Disaster Prevention and Mitigation under State Grid Hunan Electric Power Company; Wu Kai, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chief Scientist of CATL; as well as representatives from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and other organizations.
The Xiamen Institute of Energy Storage Validation Technology consists of five innovative laboratories, setting multiple world-first benchmarks:
Grid Integration Adaptability Laboratory
The world's largest station-level grid integration testing and validation platform, featuring full-scenario simulation capabilities ranging from battery cells to power grids. It can perform simulations involving up to 1,000 grid nodes. By connecting a real-time simulator to a 35 kV, 100 MVA controllable grid interface, the laboratory can cover all standard testing requirements related to grid-following and grid-forming technologies, as well as validation tests such as impedance scanning and grid-forming adaptability assessments.
High-Voltage Safety Laboratory
With a testing range spanning from 1 kV to 500 kV, this laboratory can investigate the root causes of fires and explosions under extreme high-voltage conditions, providing fundamental insights to help energy storage systems achieve the ultimate safety goal of “no fire, no explosion.”
Thermal Safety and Combustion Laboratory
Home to the world's first large-scale indoor combustion facility equipped with a 20 MW calorimeter, the laboratory features a 100,000 m³ indoor combustion space capable of conducting fire tests on up to nine large-scale energy storage containers simultaneously.
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Laboratory
Featuring the world's only testing environment capable of accommodating an entire 40-foot containerized energy storage system, the laboratory is equipped with a 65-ton turntable and a 5 MW power supply. It enables electromagnetic compatibility testing inside an anechoic chamber under real-world high-power charging and discharging conditions.
Environmental Adaptability Laboratory
The laboratory is equipped with five specialized testing facilities, including climate chambers, environmental chambers, salt spray chambers, rain test chambers, and sand-and-dust chambers. These facilities can perform system-level validation of complete energy storage containers under extreme conditions, including temperatures ranging from -50°C to 100°C, high-altitude environments equivalent to 7,200 meters above sea level, and all levels of dustproof and waterproof protection.
The Xiamen Institute of Energy Storage Validation Technology has already established partnerships with leading global certification organizations, including TÜV SÜD, TÜV Rheinland, CSA, and CGC. The institute will be fully open to the industry and will continue to develop and promote utility-scale energy storage validation standards, helping drive the industry into a new era of trustworthy, evidence-based, and sustainable development.
